Never be “too busy” to learn
Never be “too busy” to learn that next piece of technology that just appeared in your inbox or walked through your door. How many times have you “been in a meeting” when you just weren’t in the mood to listen to a pitch. I get it, most of the crap that walks into your door is just that. But a lot more often than you’d think, these people have the pure gold that you never knew you were waiting for until you saw it.
I’ve discovered the best new online platforms, tools, and gadgets by simply answering the phone and listening to someone with something to sling. I answer all of the relevant emails I receive. I’ll take a meeting with pretty much anyone as long as it’s in the bar and restaurant realm.
Time management isn’t that tough
I’ve discovered things like System Social, Upshow, and Last Shot Hangover Reducer from this. I took cold calls or meetings from people who approached several restaurants that day and I was the only guy who would take 5 minutes to listen. Check out my product reviews for these here. I’ve discovered several great, new products at the Nightclub and Bar Convention in Vegas. This was the same show that others I know were at and guess what? They glossed over the booths that I stopped at. They kept walking when I was looking closer. We had the same opportunity to learn at the same time. Yet I came away with incredibly more value than they did.
Ask yourself if your management style is to look at your competition and duplicate what they’ve already done? Or are you the innovator who takes the time to discover new things for your competitors to rip off? The first guy to the game will always win that one in the eyes of the consumer. Never be “too busy” to learn or to be the leader in your area. It’s as easy as answering the phone, answering an email, and taking a simple meeting.
