Restaurant Website Design
Every Restaurant Website Design platform has advantages and disadvantages. WordPress is not only the most search-engine-friendly platform in existence, it’s also completely free and always will be. We use the world-famous Porto WordPress theme which is widely known as the best theme for search engines as well. WordPress requires a bit longer learning curve than some, but with a free year of tech support included, it’s a non-issue.
After decades in the Restaurant Website Design and SEO business, I see an alarming trend – unnecessary monthly fees.
100% of the newer restaurant website platforms include monthly fees. They’ll sell you tools you’ll never use, and require lengthy contracts on top of that. Restaurant -centric platforms like Owner, Spothopper, Popmenu, and Bentobox are all pay-to-play software.
These restaurant website design platforms all come with slick sales pitches and the sound amazing on paper. I always ask my clients who use these platforms why they chose them. In most cases it’s for one of these reasons. The sales people are relentless and the features sound great, on the surface.
They soon find out that the interface and UX (user-experience) is not nearly as intuitive as explained. With software like Spothopper, the simplest of menu changes or updates requires you to reach out to tech support, which of course takes days, not minutes to accomplish. None of this can be done yourself, which is extremely frustrating. These platforms often strip out the majority of the SEO tools we use to get our clients to the top of the search engine rankings for local searches like “restaurants near me”.
Other software platforms like Popmenu, Spothopper, Owner, Bentobox, Wix and Squarespace strip out vital SEO tools and have big monthly fees. WordPress is free and always will be.
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. This is the single most important question to ask a web designer! We all know the drill, you leave a deposit for a website and never hear from the guy again. Or maybe he’ll call you back next week. Or he’ll return your email 5-7 working days later…maybe. For some reason, web designers are the worst communicators in the history of the computer. I always answer the phone and will never put up a brick wall between my clients and myself. For the record, my personal cell is 602-540-0128. Call or text me anytime. If I’m awake, I’ll answer. test me out!
We charge a $1500 one-time fee. Period. We never charge monthly fees for the initial design. Future SEO or other work is totally optional.
No. We offer other services like SEO for restaurants and restaurant reputation management that come with monthly fees, but for restaurant website design, we never charge monthly fees.
We need ALL assets up front before work begins! This includes your hi-res transparent logo, a PROFESSIONAL photo-shoot, your menus and all other content that will appear on the site. Work will not begin until we have this info from you. If this step isn’t followed, this is what turns a 2-day website build into a 2-month build.
Once the hosting account is set-up and WordPress is installed on your server by Godaddy (or whoever) tech support, we’ll need the WordPress login.
We will install the theme and get started once these steps have been done.
Wordpress. WordPress is widely known as the most search-engine friendly platform on the planet and is totally free. There may be optional SEO plug-ins that require payment but they are usually very affordable. An example is the All In One SEO Plugin (AIOSEO) that costs $200/year. It is a very powerful tool but is again, totally optional. WordPress has unlimited plugins available to use, so it’s features are never limited. Virtually ANY feature offered on a different website platform is also available on WordPress, free in most cases.
Almost all other platforms come with monthly fees. Some can top, when certain tools are added on, over $700 per month!! These include:
- Popmenu(starting at $179 per month, and the Essentials plan at $299 per month).
- Bentobox ($199/month for Table Service and $299/month for Counter Service, with an additional $250 set-up fee.).
- Spothopper ($249 to $520 per month).
- Owner ($499 per month).
They include tools that are often purchased, but rarely used. Some of these include huge SEO disadvantages and strip away vital tools to help you rank at the top of the search engine results. Small content changes on platforms like Popmenu or Bentobox require you to contact tech support, which is extremely unresponsive. Suddenly a 5 minute fix turns into a week long ordeal.
Absolutely not. All work is done by Erik Shellenberger personally. This cuts down on any time-zone weirdness, language barriers, and unnecessary long built times. The web design process with bigger media firms or larger companies in very cumbersome and includes an entire team of people, which causes chaos and miscommunication errors. When there’s ONE person as your go-to guy from start to finish, the process is once again efficient and effective. When the ridiculously long traditional web design process is scrapped, and common sense prevails, the job gets done in an incredibly short amount of time. Most websites are finished in 2 days, possibly less.
Yes. We will charge a card or bill via ACH for half up-front. The second half is billed once the work is completed. The second half is charged once we complete the work on our end, NOT when the website goes live. There is often a longer period of time between these two landmarks which is totally our of our control.
The hosting account is on you. You likely already have one through Godaddy or someone similar. If not, you’ll have to buy one. They’re usually cheap, around $200 per year or so. GET A FAST HOSTING ACCOUNT, DON’T CHEAP OUT ON THIS. The speed of your server equals great SEO. Google hates websites that load slowly. You likely already have a URL (yourdomain.com) so when the site goes live, we’ll need access to this to make it happen.
Once the hosting account is set-up and WordPress is installed on your server by Godaddy tech support, I’ll need the WordPress login and the work will begin.
Make sure to buy a SSL Certificate through Godaddy. This secures the site and adds the “s” the the website prefix htts://.
Don’t buy any unnecessary other crap from Godaddy, they will try to upsell you on a ton of stuff you don’t need.
We use the Porto WordPress theme. Porto is known as one of the most search-engine friendly themes available in WordPress. Porto costs $60 which is a one-time fee. Any free theme is garbage. We also use the WP Bakery page-builder which is also one of the most user-friendly page-builders available.
Yes. We offer a year of tech support for free. This includes plugin-updates, WordPress version updates, plugin conflicts, etc.
For our SEO clients, we always include web maintenance for free. We do not offer this for our one-off website design clients. This includes menu updates, contact info changes, photo updates, or whatever info you’d like changed. This does not include restructuring the site or complete rebuilds.
Absolutely. This is simple and usually takes about 30 minutes or less. If you forget how to edit a field or make a change, we are always available to you.
Yes. Well, kinda. I’ve been in the web design business for 20 years or so BUT I quit offering websites for clients years ago. Most of my past work is for restaurants, bars and coffee shops that are no longer open. I picked up this business again recently so I only have a few examples to offer. I also personally created and build the site you are on now.
